OUR LATEST PROJECTS
Below are details of our current projects:

Medway SACRE and Medway Interfaith (MIFA)

The Standing Advisory Councils for Religious Education (SACRE) were set up by the 1988 and 1993 Education Reform Acts, funded by the Local Authority, with the object of giving members of minority faiths a share in formulating school religious education syllabuses, whilst recognising that we all live in a basically Christian country. The Medway SACRE was inaugurated when Medway became a Unitary Authority, based on what had been achieved in Kent and, since its inception, Medway Interfaith Action has had a strong influence in its procedures.
Each SACRE consists of four groups, each group having one vote: one group consists of representatives of the local authority, with the schools Religious Education Advisor, another group represents the teachers, one group the Church of England and one group representatives of all minority faiths in the area. It is this last group, i.e. Group A, which is strongly represented at MIFA, and indeed the current Chairman of MIFA is also Vice Chairman of Medway SACRE .

The Group A membership currently consists of Christian and other religious denominations reflecting the principal tradition of the area;

- Free Churches (two members)
- Roman Catholic (two members)
- Buddhism (one member)
- Hinduism (one member)
- Islam (one member)
- Judaism (one member)
- Sikhism (one member)
- Baha'i (one member)
- Ravdassia Community of Medway (one member)

When a R.E. Syllabus is drafted and promulgated it is known as an 'Agreed syllabus', and since it has been agreed by all the groups it becomes mandatory on all local schools. Other R.E. publications are drafted and published as thought necessary, such as explanatory notes for teachers but these are not mandatory.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

"All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree. All these aspirations are directed toward ennobling man's life, lifting it from the sphere of mere physical existence and leading the individual towards freedom."

- Albert Einstein
